The GPS-101 Trainer is comprised of several components, each of which is described in the following paragraphs:

STUDENT COURSEWARE

The Student Manual contains an abundant amount of electronics and GPS theory. The 224 Manual contains more than 150 illustrations and clear step-by-step exercise instructions. The companion CD contains multimedia files as well as the complete Instruction Manual. The Manual has four major sections:

• GPS Principles & Practices
• Introduction to Electronics
• GPS Software
• GPS Operation

GPS TOPICS

The Manual contains excellent discussions on several GPS and GPS-related topics, affording students a thorough understanding of the Global Positioning System. Navigation concepts and GPS background are discussed. Students learn about latitude and longitude and the measurement accuracy of GPS hardware. Noise and signal-to-noise ratio concepts are also covered.

ELECTRONICS TOPICS

An excellent Introduction to any electronics course, this kit teaches key circuit functions. The Interface Board was specifically designed with low level components to facilitate teaching analog and digital circuits. Students construct the kit one section at a time. Each section contains a discussion of theory, step-by-step construction instructions, and hands-on exercises. Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is taught, and the student mounts several SMT devices to the PCB. Topical coverage includes:

GPS SOFTWARE

GPS software for use on a PC is provided. The software has a simulator mode that displays most functions and can be used to demonstrate the system operation. The output of the Interface Board provides an RS-232 level signal. This signal can be connected to any PC that has NMEA GPS software installed.

HARDWARE

After assembly, the completed Trainer contains the following hardware components:

• Interface Circuit Board
• Case
• Batteries
• AC Adapter
• Serial Cable

ANTENNA

Although there is no antenna included with this package, the instructor has the ability to simulate signals using software supplied in this trainer.

REPLACEMENT PARTS

The student manual, cable, and parts must be replaced for each student in the second and subsequent classes. If the school has a site license, the instructor may print as many copies of the manual as needed for the classroom.

The Instructor's Package contains:

The brand and model of the commercial GPS receiver supplied may be different than shown. The Instructor's Package is also available with the Re-Radiating System.

GPS RE-RADIATING SYSTEM

Most classrooms do not have exposure to the sky that is sufficient to view at least three satellites. By positioning an active weatherproof GPS antenna on the roof or other high point , GPS Re-Radiating System can deliver strong real-time signals from a relatively large number of GPS satellites into the classroom. The GPS Re-Radiating System components:

This Electronics Module is a complete “Introduction to Electronics” course covering all GPS and electronics topics. It is an exciting kit that also teaches Global Positioning System (GPS) technology.
